If your politician is talking gibberish and nonsense about recreating jobs in manufacturing please vote them out of office.  If your news media is giving airtime to some moron politician making up stories about bringing factory jobs to your country or neighbourhood, change the channel or get better media.

Sometimes it is hard to fathom just how stupid politicians can be. [For some reason it is somewhat less difficult today].  For 5000 years the world was 80+% agrarian (farmers).  Strangely people don’t seem to have trouble grasping how, the steam engine, railways, the discovery of oil and electricity enhanced industrial development and drove most employment to industry, much of it in manufacturing.  People seem to have less of a grasp on the transition in the 70’s and 80’s to a service economy and many appear to have almost no awareness that we actually moved from a service economy to an information economy a few years ago.  Perhaps a few minutes listening to Jeff Immelt CEO of GE would be worthwhile.  GE is a world class company.  GE has over 300,000 employees and there CEO expects all new employees to learn computer programming, do you imagine that is so they can better physically turn rivets on the assembly line?

Now,  I realize there are a few million manufacturing jobs around, and some of them are awesome,  and some innovative companies like Tesla will create some, but how about some truth in our thinking.

If you just graduated from ‘Blacksmith college’ you are likely headed to the new presidents cabinet.

Some emerging and near-term future uses of 3-D printing

Automotive and Industrial Manufacturing

  • Consolidate many components into a single complex part
  • Create production tooling
  • Faster product development cycle with rapid prototyping, form and fit testing

Aerospace

  • Create complex geometry parts not possible with traditional manufacturing
  • Control density, stiffness, and other material properties of a part; also    grade such properties over a part
  • Create lighter parts

Pharma / Healthcare

  • Plan surgery using precise anatomical models based on CT scan or MRI
  • Develop custom orthopedic implants and prosthetics
  • Use 3-D printed cadavers for medical training
  • Bioprint live tissues for testing during drug development

 Retail

  • Create custom toys, jewelry, games, home decorations, and other products
  • Print spare or replacement parts for auto or home repair, for example
phones
The Donald on a $3500 phone.

Other Sectors where Technology will Vaporize jobs.

Power Industry

Until recently, the utility companies were a safe career path – dirty power is over – with improvements individual (and personal) solar and other clean energy solutions will improve at almost the rate of Moore’s Law –

“Power generation plants will begin to close down.

Coal plants will begin to close down.

  • Many railroad and transportation workers will no longer be needed.
  • Even wind farms, natural gas, and bio-fuel generators will begin to close down.
  • Ethanol plants will be phased out or repurposed.
  • Utility company engineers, gone.
  • Line repairmen, gone.

New Jobs Created

  • Manufacturing power generation units the size of ac units will go into full production.
  • Installation crews will begin to work around the clock.
  • The entire national grid will need to be taken down (a 20 year project). Much of it will be recycled and the recycling process alone will employ many thousands of people.
  • Micro-grid operations will open in every community requiring a new breed of engineers, managers, and regulators.

Transport

Jobs Going Away

  • Taxi and limo drivers, gone.
  • Bus drivers, gone.
  • Truck drivers, gone.
  • Gas stations, parking lots, traffic cops, traffic courts, gone.
  • Pizza (and other food) delivery drivers, gone.
  • Mail delivery drivers, gone.
  • FedEx and UPS delivery jobs, gone.

As people shift from owning their own vehicles to a transportation-on-demand system, the total number of vehicles manufactured will also begin to decline.

Education

We all want better education from better educators,  for those who don’t know it has already arrived,  Khan Academy, Coursera, Code Academy, MOOC and more, why would a parent have their child educated by a mediocre teacher who struggled in teachers college (of all places) when they can have Sal Khan educate their child?

Jobs Going Away

  • Teachers.
  • Trainers.
  • Professors.

Other

Perhaps you have heard of Robots, Drones and Bots?

Jobs Going Away

  • Fishing bots will replace fishermen.
  • Mining bots will replace miners.
  • Ag bots will replace farmers.
  • Inspection bots will replace human inspectors.
  • Warrior drones will replace soldiers.
  • Robots can pick up building material coming out of the 3D printer and begin building a house with it.”

Above Excerpted from Thomas Frey Post @Futurist:

us-steel-employment-and-productionIf your politician is talking gibberish and nonsense about recreating jobs in manufacturing please vote them out of office.  If your news media is giving airtime to some moron politician making up stories about bringing factory jobs to your country or neighbourhood, change the channel or get better media.  The only way to get a product manufacturer or assembler to use humans in 2017, or in the future to manufacture or assemble things, is to bribe them with tax rebates (which they steal from you) with which they then create very temporary and very artificial jobs.

They did it in Ontario after the 2008 financial crisis when the Government gave roughly $7B of tax payer money to GM to temporarily save 6,000 jobs.  There are multiple problems with this, first of all the government is one of the least efficient organizations in the world, they need to raise between $10 Billion and $14 Billion from you the taxpayer in order to donate $7 Billion to a company for artificial jobs that will not be able to compete with Robot(s) as of about 10 years ago.  And as of today though almost 80% of Canadian’s have no savings who do you think the government will tap to pay off GM’s $3.6 Billion pension shortfall?  Think about this for a minute,  while the median income in Canada is $30,000, half of Canadians make less than $30,000, some 6,000 highly unionized workers show up in Oshawa a few hundred days a year, watch the robots make cars, get incredible benefits, almost unlimited sick days and family healthcare, and when they are bored of watching the robots make cars when they turn 60 they come to you to pay for their retirement.

This is a worldwide issue and it is a very serious issue, societies and people who invest in education will prosper.  Societies and people who embrace change will prosper.  There are dozens of jobs which did not exist ten years ago which almost all have vacancies for thousands and often 10’s of thousands of positions today, do you know a social media manager?  Do you aspire to be a Chief Listening Officer?

The only way the clowns who have just taken up residence in Washington could possibly recreate manufacturing jobs:  Ban all technology (including calculators), start assembly lines manufacturing abacuses (abaci) because many people seem to have trouble with basic math!

Again, if your media is broadcasting any analysis or speech on the prospect of creating manufacturing jobs, change the channel. From a January Congressional report by some staffer in Washington;  The health of the U.S. manufacturing sector has long been of great concern to Congress. The decline in manufacturing employment since the start of the 21st century has stimulated particular congressional interest, leading Members to introduce hundreds of bills over many sessions of Congress intended to support domestic manufacturing activity in various ways. The proponents of such measures frequently contend that the United States is by various measures falling behind other countries in manufacturing, and they argue that this relative decline can be mitigated or reversed by government policy.

These idiots spend most of your tax dollars in some fantasy world where manufacturing will some how return to 1950’s levels and life will be like leave it to Beaver (all white and clean), stop tolerating this.

Health Care is responsible for more than twice as much employment in USA as manufacturing, why don’t they figure out how to make health car jobs better, since that is a sector that is still growing. Even the clowns who waste taxpayer money writing these stupid reports on the prospect of understanding the manufacturing sector know it is a joke.  If you know the politician has no idea what they are talking about change the channel.
